TUNWASE

Omotunwase Osinaike is a Designer, Engineer and Artist with experience working in Real Estate Development, Interior Design, Furniture Design and Construction. He has a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering & Design Management from Loughborough University and a Masters of Arts in Furniture Design from Central Saint Martins which informs his desire to collaborate and work with diverse professionals across several disciplines. Whilst pursuing his undergraduate education, Tunwase gained experience working as a design assistant at Stoneforce Group, where he earned a Diploma in Industrial studies. During the first year of his masters, he again worked as a design assistant at Samuel Ross & Associates and Concrete Objects on interdisciplinary projects including public installations, furniture and sculpture. He deferred the second year of the program to return to Lagos where he gained experience working as a design manager and quality controller on residential projects for 2 years.

He has since gone on to operate in London, leading on projects including three temporary spatial installations, the design and build of a permanent retail store and the Design and Curation of Natural Synthesis, The Nigeria Pavilion at the London Design Biennale of 2023. He most recently completed a residency program at the Bomb Factory Art Foundation to develop and expand his artistic practice. His personal practice is guided by an underlying intention to contribute to the promotion and advancement of the indigenous traditions, methods and discoveries of Africa. It proposes design as an activity to create heritage, by recognising identity formulation as an ongoing process. He is particularly interested in the meaning and depth embedded in several artefacts in the continent and the metaphysical, social and ritual functions they served. He seeks to use this approach to create deeply meaningful insignias.

“My work often functions as a delicate chisel, interrogating and unearthing aspects of our shared humanity. Whether contending with the wealth of knowledge and excellence embedded within my ancestral codes or reaching curiously and speculatively into an imagined plural future, I’m always in search of the ethereal threads that connect us. I find the best method to construct and forge these narratives is with the total transformation of spaces with interventions that are mediated through historical, social and emotive narratives. I will describe my work as the outcome of wonder and observation of the enchanting aspects of our world”.
